إن الناظر في هذا الكتاب القيم سيجد أنه كتاب لا تقدر قيمته العلمية. فقد عمل من خلاله ابن النديم على إحصاء جميع الكتب العربية المنقولة من الأمم المتخلفة والمؤلفة في جميع أنواع العلوم حيث يصفها ويبين مترجمها أو مؤلفها، ثم يذكر طرفا من تاريخ حياتهم ويعين تاريخ وفاتهم. لذا كان الكتاب على هذا النمط أجمع كتاب، لإحصاء ما ألفه الناس إلى آخر القرن الرابع الهجري وحق له بذلك أن يكون مرجعا لكل باحث من المسلمين والمستشرقين غيرهم.
