كتاب يرصد فنون البلدان الإسلامية في القرون الستة الأولى للإسلام ويقوم الكتاب بعملية مسح للأعمال الفنية والمعمارية التي شهدت المرحلة الممتدة من مطلع القرن 13 وحتى القرن 19 ويتبع التسلسل الزمني والتقسيم الجغرافي ويتعامل مع العمارة على نحو منفصل عن سائر الفنون إذ يصف المؤلفان أعدادا لا تحصى من الأعمال الفنية وذلك في الوقت الذي يغوصان فيه في الدلالات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية لتلك الأعمال متأملين في مسائل مثل الوظيفة والرعاية الفنية والمعنى. ويتضمن الكتاب دراسة معمقة حول الإرث الفني الإسلامي في أوروبا وفي الأراضي الإسلامية خلال القرنين 19 و20.
