تعود أهمية كتاب القاهرة إلى كونه دراسة موسوعية تحليلية شاملة، لم تقف عند التاريخ السياسي للعاصمة بقدر ما حاول المؤلف أن يبني منهجية تاريخية وثائقية لدراسة تطور عمران العاصمة منذ الفتح الإسلامي إلى الآن، ساعده على ذلك كونه مر بطور كبير في التعامل مع المصادر التاريخية عن القاهرة نشرًا وتحقيقًا، خاصة الكتاب الأشهر \"المواعظ والاعتبار بذكر الخطط والآثار\" الذي ألفه المقريزي في العصر المملوكي، ونشره أيمن فؤاد في مؤسسة الفرقان بلندن، يتكون الكتاب من مدخل وستة فصول، ومذيل ببليوجرافيا مختارة عن مصادر ومراجع تاريخ القاهرة، والأخيرة تعد إضافة حقيقية للباحثين والدارسين، تعكس خبرة وإلمام المؤلف، لكن ما جعل هذا الكتاب مختلفا، حرص الهيئة المصرية العامة للكتاب على إلحاق ملحق للخرائط التاريخية للقاهرة، وإضافة إلى كتالوج ضخم لصور القاهرة عبر العصور وتراثها العمراني.
