يعرض المعمار والمنظر رفعة الجادرجي في كتابه هذا دراسة تحليلية للعلاقة التي يمارسها الفرد الإنسان عند تحديد هويته وتركيبها ومن خلال تعامله مع المُصنعات كالأثاث المنزلي والأبنية في معيشه اليومي وتبحث الدراسة في مسألتين أولهما كيف يحدد المجتمع تراتيبية مقام هوية الفرد نسبة إلى المصنعات التي يتعامل معها، وثانيهما كيف يركب الفرد مقومات هويته عن طريق تعامله مع تلك المصنعات، فنجد في هذه الدراسة أن المصنعات عامة، كالعمارة، نسبة إلى الجادرجي لا تؤلف شكليات وبنيات مادية تسخر لاستعمالات نفعية وجمالية فحسب وإنما أداة فعالة في تكوين هوية الفرد وهنا يكمن مصدر أهميتها.
