\"فلوبير في مصر 1849\" خلال رحلته إلى الشرق الأدنى سنة 1849 دون فلوبير انطباعاته في سلسلة من دفاتر ملاحظات الجيب التي ما تزال موجودة إلى الآن في أوراقه وبعد عودته نسخ ووسع ما دونه فيها تاركا لمخيلته العنان في خلط المشاهدات بالتحيلات قبل هذا التاريخ كان فلوبير يردد حالما \"آه كم أنا على استعداد للتخلي عن كل نساء العالم مقابل الحصول على مومياء كليوباترا\" وهذه الجملة مثال على إسراف فلوبير الشاب في عاطفته الغريبة نحو الشرق وكان الطالب فلوبير في روان الشمالية الكئيبة مولعا بالشمس والآثار القديمة.
