لم يسر الزمخشري في مقاماته على نهج الهمذاني والحريري، ولم يستخدم طريقتهما، وإنما هو في المقامة نسيج وحدة، فلا نجد في مقاماته هزلا كما نجد عند سابقيه، وإنما نجد الجد كل الجد. ولعل السبب في ذلك يعود أول الأمر إلى جدية المواضيع التي طرقها من جهة، وإلى أن وعظه وعظ حقيقي ينبع من أعماق قلب عامر بالإيمان، يختلف عن ذلك الوعظ الذي كان يظهر في مقامات الهمذاني أو الحريري، ويحس القارئ أنه وعظ كان يستعمله بطل الرواية أحبولة لاصطياد أموال الناس الذين يغترون به. ولم يترك الزمخشري ناحية يحس أنه يمسك بها قارئه ويؤثر عليه إلا أتى بها، وكأنه-وقد كان ينصح نفسه-أراد أن يعجب الناس بأسلوب مقاماته فيكبوا على قراءتها ويفيدوا بالتالي من هذه النصائح الجمة التي أراد أن يمنحها لنفسه وللناس.
