الحكم والأمثال هي عصارة تجارب الشعوب وذاكرتها ولكل شعب ثقافته التي لا تخلو من حكمة وأمثاله التي يتم انتشارها وتداولها من جيل إلى جيل لتكون أكثر أشكال التعبير الشعبية سحرا وتأثيرا بقوة معانيها وإيجاز نصها وجماله وقدراتها على النفاذ في أفئدة وعقول الناس رغم أن الحكمة والمثال كليهما من جوامع الكلم إلا أن الحكمة تفيد معنى واحدا بينما يفيد المثل معنيين ظاهرا وباطنا أما الظاهر فهو ما يحمله من إشارة تاريخية إلى حادث معين كان سبب ظهوره وأما الباطن فهو ما يفيد معناه من حكمة وإرشاد وتشبيه وتصوير فالحكمة إذن تتضمن موعضة أو نصيحة أو عبرة.
