يتناول الكتاب قصة طالبان حيث يسافر الطالبان السعوديان سعد ومنير في بعثة دراسية إلى أميركا حيث تبدأ رحلة الغربة. يتعرفان إلى الكثير من المبتعثين السعوديين : حنان التي تربطها علاقة حب مع منير عبر الإنترنت ؛ وغريب الفيلسوف ذو الأفكار الغريبة ؛ وأحلام التي يرافقها أخوها رابح كمحرم في حين يقضي لياليه في البارات والملاهي الليلية. وبينما كانت سكارلت الأميركية تساعد منير على تعلم اللغة الإنجليزية، كان هو يحدثها عن الإسلام وفلسطين.لكن المبتعثين السعوديين لم يكونوا يدركون، وهم يغادرون بنظرات حائرة وابتسامات مرتبكة، أنهم حين يعودون سيكونون قد تغيروا، وأنهم ربما عادوا إلى غربة أشد وأقسى.
