تعتبر هذه اليوميات واحدة من أعظم النصوص الأوروبية التي وضعت في هذا اللون الممتع من الأدب، بقلم شاعر وكاتب مخضرم عاش في القرنين الثامن عشر والتاسع عشر ودون فيها تجربته في السفر والمعرفة والمغامرة نحو ما كان يعتبر مستودع الفنون ومجمع الآثار العظيمة لعصر النهضة. دون غوتة يومياته هذه إستنادا إلى رحلتين إلى إيطاليا، الأولى قام بها في أيلول / سبتمبر 1786، واستمرت حتى شباط / فبراير من العام 1787، فقضى خمسة شهور في فيرونا، البندقية، روما، والرحلة الثانية بدأها في حزيران / يونيو من العام 1787 واستمرت حتى نيسان / إبريل من العام 1788، قضاها هذه المرة كلها في روما عازما على التمتع بمعالمها وآثارها ومتاحفها.
