تتناول الرواية وتدور أحداثها حول فكرة واحدة فقط، هي أن كاتبا إيرانيا يريد أن يكتب قصة حب في إيران، والسيد بتروفتش الرقيب والمسؤول عن المطبوعات يراقب كل كلمة يكتبها، ويطلب إليه أن يعدل الأحداث والمواقف والشخصيات بما يتناسب مع عادات وثقافة المجتمع الإيراني والثورة الإسلامية، مقص الرقيب المسلط دوما على قلم الكاتب، يجبره على أن يلتزم لغة معينة، مثلا تم حذف كلمة مومس من معجم اللغة الفارسية، واستـبـدلت بالسيدة غير المحصنة. ومنع السيد بتروفيتش الكاتب من كتابة عبارة (الأوراق تتساقط عن الأشجار وهي ترقص) ويطلب إليه أن يحذف كلمة رقص لأنها تـعتبر سوقية ومحرمة.
