يورد المؤلف في هذا الكتاب وصفا لإمارات الخليج ودويلاتها كالبحرين وعمان ومسقط والساحل المتصالح وقطر وايران ويتحدث عن مدنها الرئيسية مثل المنامة والمحرق والبصرة ورأس الخيمة ومسقط وهرمز وبندر عباس وبوشهر، وعن الحرف التي كان يمتهنها السكان كالزراعة وصيد اللؤلؤ، ويتطرق إلى بعض عاداتهم السائدة آنذاك. وفي أحد الفصول يتحدث تشارلز بلجريف عن نشوء الحركة الوهابية وانتشارها وفي فصول أخرى يتكلم عن التجارة في الخليج. والطابع الغالب على الكتاب هو وصف الأعمال العسكرية والتنافس البريطاني البرتغالي والتركي (العثماني) والفارسي والهولندي للسيطرة على مياهه وسواحله واحتلال اماراته. لذلك يعتبر الكتاب أحد أهم المراجع التاريخية الهامة عن المنطقة، ومن الجدير بالذكر أن المؤلف قد توفي عام 1970.
