يبدأ الغزالي في هذا الكتاب بالأعتقاد ويعرفه على انه عقد القلب على صورة ما أو ظن في القلب بوجود شيء يغيب عنك والعلم هو الاعتقاد الجازم الثابت المطابق للواقع ويوكد الغزالي في الكتاب أن المعرفة هي مادة التقرب إلى الله وأساسها معرفة الله بأسماءه وصفاته والاعتقاد هي صورة الله في قلبك والتي لابد أن تخلو من تعطيل والحاد وتشبيه وتجسيم ونقص وحلول واتحاد وإباحة وتبني على التنزيه والتعظيم والكبرياء وبين العلم والفكر خطوات أولها السماع واليقظة والانتباه والتذكر وآخرها التفكر وهو تغذية راجعة للاعتقاد والعمل.
