فصول هذا الكتاب في تتابعها تمثل الأدوار المختلفة التي قطعها التفكير الاجتماعي في تطوره، وتصور للقارئ ذلك التاريخ الشاق الذي اجتازه علم الاجتماع منذ نشأته حتى العصر الحاضر، هذا وقد درج معظم المفكرين عندما يبحثون في الدراسات الإنسانية أن يبدءوا بمفكري اليونان، ولكني آثرت أن أعتقد فعلا عن التفكير الاجتماعي في الشرق القديم ليستبين القارئ عظمة أفكار الشرقيين ومبلغ أصالتها، ثم تكلمت بعد ذلك عن التفكير الاجتماعي عند اليونان والرومان والمسيحيين وعند فلاسفة المسلمين، وعرضت لمظاهره في العصر الحديث مشيرا إلى أهم المدارس الفلسفية التي غذت ميدان الدراسات الاجتماعية ومهدت لظهور علم الاجتماع بصورة جدية، وتكلمت بعد ذلك عن العلم بين أقطابه الثلاثة \"كونت وسبنسر ودور كايم\" واستأثرت الاتجاهات الاجتماعية المعاصرة بمزيد من عنايتي، فعقدت لها الفصل الأخير ولا سيما ما كان منها منتشرا في أمريكا وأوربا.
