يتناول الكتاب إن كل التطورات والصراعات والمشكلات التي تعرضت لها المدينة للاحتفاظ بالذاتية التاريخية مرتبطة بالمكان، ويدفعنا المكان هنا إلى دراسة ما فرض عليه من تغيرات على أرضها من ردم برك، وإزالة تلال، وشق مجاري مائية، وهدم بناء وتخطيط للعمران، وكلها مرتبطة بحياة الإنسان ودوره المؤثر في بناء المدينة، وإذا كان لابد من تحديد القصد من هذه الدراسة فإن هذا لا يعني البحث في نظرية كلاسيكية في دراسة المدن، وإنما محاولة التحرر من شرنقتها لتفسير التطورات والصراعات التي أدت إلى القطيعة الحضارية في تاريخ تطور مدينة القاهرة، وهي نموذج تنفرد به بين مدن العالم.
