لعل محمد مكية هو الفنان المعماري الأكثر صدقا في التعبير العمراني عن حيوية وغنى الهم الجمالي العربي في القرن العشرين، وذلك عبر سلسلة تصاميم هندسية جميلة وأصيلة، عكست أيضا نزعة إنسانية عالمية التطلع وعراقية الجذور في آن معا، تأصلت في مجالات عدة لتسهم في تجديد وتطوير الطراز العمراني التقليدي في الشرق العربي الإسلامي. وهذا التقييم، كرسته مبادرة لجنة تحكيم دولية، قبل عدة سنوات، بمنح الدكتور محمد مكية جائزة أفضل فنان معماري ولقب \"عميد التصاميم الهندسة العربية\"، وتم ذلك خلال قمة المؤتمر الدولي للهندسة والاستثمار والتطوير المنعقدة في دبي عام 2003، والتي اعتبرت تكريم هذا المعماري الرائد تكريما لفن العمارة العربي والإسلامي المعاصر.
