تناول الكتاب دراسة بحثية عن شارع محمد على وموقعه الجغرافى بمدينة القاهرة، ويوضح المؤلف أن أهمية شارع محمد على لا تقتصر فقط على ما يحويه من آثار فالأحياء الواقعة إلى الشرق من الشارع كانت وما تزال تمثل القاهرة القديمة، أما الأحياء الغربية من الشارع مثلت نواة المدينة الأوروبية أو المدينة الجديدة، وذلك بإنشاء قصر عابدين، بل كان للشارع دور مهم فى الحياة السياسية، حيث كان ملتقى رجال السياسة والصحافة والأدب، وكما كان له دور فى الحياة الاجتماعية والفنية حيث عاش به العديد من الفنانين.
