يتناول الكتاب عرضا مركزا وشاملا لتاريخ العالم العربي في العصر الحديث، ويغطي فترة تاريخية تبلغ نحو أربعة قرون، تبدأ بالتوسع العثماني التركي في بلاد الشام ومصر وتمتد حتى بداية الحرب العالمية الأولى (1914- 1918) يمر تاريخ العرب خلال هذه الفترة بمرحلتين واضحتين ؛ أولهما المرحلة التي انفرد فيها الأتراك العثمانيون بحكم العالم العربي، بعد ضمه إلى دولتهم، واستمرت هذه المرحلة حتى نهاية القرن الثامن عشر، أي أنها بلغت نحو ثلاثة قرون إلا قليلا.
