يدعو الخشت في هذا الكتاب، إلى تجاوز «عصر الجمود الديني» الذي طال أكثر من اللازم في تاريخ أمتنا العربية، من أجل تأسيس عصر ديني جديد، نخرج فيه من دائرة الكهنوت الذي صنعه البشر بعد اكتمال الوحي الإلهي، وتلقفه مقلدون أصحاب عقول مغلقة ونفوس ضيقة لا تستوعب رحابة العالم ولا رحابة الدين. ويرفض الخشت، في كتابه، تجديد الخطاب الديني التقليدي، فهو يرى أن تجديد الخطاب الديني عملية أشبه ما تكون بترميم بناء قديم، والأجدى هو إقامة بناء جديد بمفاهيم جديدة ولغة جديدة ومفردات جديدة إذا أردنا أن نقرع أبواب عصر ديني جديد.
