لم ينل الحجاج بن يونس حقه من الإنصاف من قبل الكتاب والمصنفين فقد وصفوه بكل رذيلة وجردوه عن كل فضيل، فانبرى مؤلف الكتاب للتحقق مما نسب إلى الحجاج وذلك من خلال عودته إلى المصادر الدينية والتاريخية والأدبية المخطوطة والمطبوعة فكان كلما أمعن النظر فيها امتلأ قلبه بحبه والإعجاب به فهو إذا نظر في سياسته وجده سائسا لا يخدع ومقداما لا تشق عصاه وخصما يدين له الأعداد بالتسليم والإذعان وقد مثل دورا عظيما من أدوار حياة الأمة الإسلامية فجمع كلمتها ونظم جهادها وقرر مصيرها.
