الرواية تتناول مراحل التاريخ الإسلامي منذ بدايته حتى العصر الحديث وتركز في هذه الرواية على الأحداث التاريخية الهامة التي وقعت في عهد أحمد بن طولون كما تشتمل على وصف لمصر ولبلاد النوبة في أواسط القرن الثالث للهجرة كما تهتم الرواية بوصف الأحوال السياسية والاجتماعية والأدبية في العهد الطولوني وقد اعتمد زيدان في هذه الرواية التاريخية على المزج بين خياله وبين الوقائع التاريخية التي اعتمد في ذكرها على مرجعين رئيسيين كما ذكر وهما تاريخ المقريزي وتاريخ التمدن الإسلامي.
