تناول الكتاب عصر النهضة الأوروبية حيث العنف، نتيجة استغلال الطبقة العاملة، وشيوع خطف الأطفال والنساء، لاستغلالهم في العمل، حمل العصر الراهن الإرهاب كظاهرة من ظواهر عصر العولمة، مستلهما النهضة العلمية التي يشهدها العالم، كرد فعل لتفشي الاضطهاد الاقتصادي والفكري والسياسي والديني والهيمنة على الشعوب ونهب ثرواتها. وبسبب تطور وسائل التدمير والقتل، تطورت معها وسائل العنف المسلح. ويعد الإرهاب أحد أنواع العنف المسلح وأكثرها شيوعا. ويندر أن توجد دولة في هذا العالم تخلو من منظمات العنف السياسي، لهذا فقد أصبح العنف السياسي ظاهرة دولية استمدت جذورها منذ أغوار سحيقة من التاريخ الإنساني.
