يتناول هذا الكتاب النقد من القديم إلى العصر الحديث حيث يركز الكتاب على النقد عند مفكري اليونان وفلاسفتهم الكبار الذين علموا العالم أصول هذا الفن العريق وإن كان بعض نقدهم أخذوه عن الفراعنة كما أثبت ذلك في نقدي لمسرحية (الضفادع) لـ (أرسنوفانيس) وقد قسمه الكاتب إلى بابين الباب الأول تناول فيه النقد عن اليونان وكذلك الخطابة وما كان لهم فيها من اتجاهات وآراء والباب الثاني جعله الكاتب عن النقد في أوروبا متناولا جذور هذا الفن وصداه عندهم.
