تتناول الرواية شخصية من أكثر الشخصيات إثارة للجدل في التاريخ الإسلامي وهي شخصية الحجاج بن يوسف الثقفي ذلك السياسي الأموي والقائد العسكري الذي لم يأل جهدا في تثبيت دعائم الدولة الأموية وقد اشتهر عن الحجاج أنه شديد البطش بخصومه ظلوما جبارا حتى إنه في حربه مع عبد الله بن الزبير لم يتردد في حصار مكة وضربها بالمجانيق مما أدى إلى هدم الكعبة وتنسب إلى الحجاج أعمال أخرى عظيمة ارتبطت بالفتوح الإسلامية وتخطيط المدن وتنقيط القرآن الكريم.
