ميزت الباحثة بين دور زوجات الخلفاء وهن عربيات ودور الجواري من غير العربيات فقد كان الخلفاء الأمويون لا يتخذون الزوجات إلا من العربيات ولم يكونوا يتقيدون بقاعدة الحد من عدد الزوجات إلى أربع حيث بلغ عدد زوجات عبد الملك بن مروان مثلا خمس عشرة زوجة وتمثل هذه الظاهرة امتدادا للعادات القبلية في الجزيرة العربية قبل الإسلام وهي عادات مرتبطة بمتطلبات الغزو من جهة وقواعد النسب من جهة أخرى.
