يتناول الكتاب منظومة متكاملة من الدراسات التي تسعى إلى توضيح طبيعة الدراما كنشاط معرفي مبني في الأنسان، وهو يبلور مفهومها العام الذي لا يتغير عبر الزمان وإن تنوعت تجلياته في الممارسات التى تختلف أشكالها وأهدافها من عصر إلى آخر، وذلك وفق أرضيته الفلسفية وفكره السائد ورؤيته للعالم، فالكتاب في مجموعه يرتكز على فرضية عدم انفصال الفن عن الفكر، أو الشكل عن المضمون، فيبحر بنا عبر تاريخ الدراما الغربية منذ بداياتها عند الإغريق وحتى يومنا هذا ليرصد الأصول الفلسفية للنظرية الدرامية التي وضعها أرسطو في محاولة لتفسير أسباب هيمنتها على الفكر الدرامي الغربي، بل والعربي أيضا.
