تطورت المجتمعات وطرق الاتصال في المجتمعات البشرية إلا أن ابتكر الإنسان اللغة ثم الكتابة حوالي 400 سنة قبل الميلاد ثم الطبابة المتفرقة سنة 1465 واخترع جراهام بل التليفون سنة 1875 واخترع مورس التلغراف سنة 1833 وظهرت السينما سنة 1895 ثم الراديو 1920 ثم التليفزيون 1930 وتطورت البشرية وصولا إلى مرحلة وسائل الإعلام الإلكترونية، وبدأت هذه المرحلة منذ عام 1900 واستخدم فيها الإنسان التلغراف والتليفون والسينما والإذاعة المسموعة والمرءية، ويقول ماكلوهان أن الإتصال الشخصي الشفهي كان هو الرابطة مع الماضي واستغرق وقت طويل مثل عصر لحديث والكتابة معظم التاريخ البشري وكانت السمة الرئيسية لهذا العصر هي الفردية الإتصالية سواء في مرحلة الحديث أو حتى بعد اختراع الكتابة وظلت الفردية هي طابع الاتصال عبر هذا العصر الطويل.
