اعتمد الكاتب في كتابه على مصدري الوحي والنصوص محددا في ذلك منهجا وأدلة، وأن على علماء الآثار الاهتداء بالنصوص وتضمينها لكتابتهم للتاريخ السوداني، كما أوضح المؤلف أن موضوع الهوية الذي تطرق له في الكتاب لا ينبغي أن يكون موضوع ساعة في السودان لعدم جدواه؛ وبتناوله له لم يرد أن يذكي نارها وإنما ليصحح مفهومها، فالهوية ليست عرقية بل وليس العرق من مقوماتها أو عناصرها بل هي أرض ينتمي لها المرء انتماء طويل المدى نسبيا أو مطلقا كافيا لنسبته إليها وحبه الصادق وولاؤه لها مع عناصر حضارية وثقافية مميزة لها.
