الكتاب يناقش طبيعة تأثير الإنترنت على اللغة عامة، وعلى الإنجليزية خاصة، وخصوصا الانطباع السائد، بأن الإنترنت سوف تكون له آثار سلبية على مستقبل اللغة، وأن نوعية اللغة المستخدمة فى الشبكة الدولية للمعلومات هى التى سوف تسود، وأن المعايير اللغوية سوف تتهاوى، ويضمحل الإبداع ؛ نتيجة لقيام العلومة بفرض التشابه على الجميع. ويوضح الكتاب أن الإنترنت يتيح توسعا كبيرا فى مجال اللغة وتنوعها، ويوفر فرصا غير مسبوقة للإبداع الشخصى، وهو فى الوقت نفسه، فهو يحتاج، لكى ينمو ويستمر كوسيط لغوى، أن يطور المبادئ والمعايير التى يقوم عليها، والتى تختلف كثيرا عن تلك التى تميز الوسائط الأخرى.
