يعود استيطان منطقة حائل الواقعة في شمالي المملكة العربية السعودية إلى العصور الحجرية وقد ساعدت بيئتها المناسبة إلى حد كبير على جذب الإنسان إليها وتفضيلها على غيرها ومما تركه لنا إنسان حائل تلك الكتابات المعروفة تجاوزا بـ (الثمودية) وهي كتابات يستحسن أن نسميها أيضا الكتابات الشعبية فعددها ومناطق انتشارها ومضامينها يجعلها كذلك فهي تزيد على الآلاف وانتشارها يغطي بشكل واضح جميع مناطق شبه الجزيرة العربية من شمالها إلى جنوبها مرورا بوسطها ومن غربها إلى شرقها.
