يتناول الكتاب كفاح رجل لم يتزحزح عن مواقفه برغم كل المصائب التي حلت به لكنه يتضمن أيضا قصة حب فريدة يمكن أن تشكل زاوية أخرى لقراءة الكتاب وقد يكون بطلاها نيكوس كازنتزاكي الطيب والشرس في آن واحد وإيليني التي ذاقت الأمرين بسبب عناده في ملاحقة مثله الأعلى \"عندما أسافر أندم على اضطهادي لك\" يقول وإلى جانب إيليني (هيلينا أو هيلين باللغات الأخرى، غير اليونانية) هناك نساء أخريات كثيرات لأن كازنتزاكي لم يتزوج ثانية إلا عندما صار وزيرا في بلاده وقبل ذلك اتفق مع صديقته على \"ميثاق الأيام العشرة\" التي يلتقيان فيها سنويا بينما تنوب الرسائل عن اللقاء بقية أيام السنة التي ينعزل فيها الناسك من أجل الكتابة حتى مجيء الشيخوخة ثم الموت في صفحات جد مؤثرة من الكتاب.
