يتناول الكتاب ظاهرة القيادة من الظواهر القديمة الحديثة، فلقد تم الاهتمام بها منذ القدم، وظهرت في ملاحم الأبطال، وفي انتصارات قادة الجيوش وفي رؤى الزعامات، وتطورت مع تطور الفكر الإداري، فبدأ الاهتمام بضرورة القيادة لأنها أكثر تأثيرا من الإدارة، ولأن القادة يؤثرون بممارساتهم التي تعطي اهتماما للعلاقات الإنسانية أكثر من اعتبارات العمل، وتطورت خلال هذه الأفكار، نظريات القيادة التي ركزت في بادئ الأمر على السمات الشخصية للقادة، كالذكاء، الشجاعة، ثم انتقلت إلى السلوكيات، وحددت بذلك أنماطا للقيادة، فإذا تعامل القائد بسلوكيات المشاركة، فهو ديمقراطي، وإذا اتسمت سلوكاه باتخاذ القرار بصفة فردية والتعامل مع المرؤوسين بإصدار الأوامر فهو قائد أتوقراطي.
