إن تأثير جون لا تغشوا أوستن في الفلسفة المعاصرة لا يقل شأنا عن تأثير كبار الفلاسفة والمناطقة، واللسانيين. وتعاظم بعد موته فوصف بأنه \"أحد أكبر المفكرين البريطانيين\" لما كان لديه من علم ثاقب وخلاق\". لقد كان دوره أساسيا طبعت المحاضرات التي ألقاها أوستن، عام 1955، في جامعة هارفرد طبعة أولى، عام 1962، الطبعة الثانية، وهي المترجمة لمحاضراته، وهو ما جعلها أكثر وضوحا وأمانة هنا، عاد فيها محققو نص أوستن إلى الملاحظات التي دونها، إعدادا لكلماته.
