يحكي هذا الكتاب قصة الطريق التي سارت عليها الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية علميا وتقانيا في صنع القنبلة الذرية أثناء الحرب العالمية الثانية والتي وصلت ذروتها باستخدام هذا السلاح النووي ضد اليابان مما جعل من مدينتي هيروشيما وناكازاكي خلال برهة قصيرة أكواما من الحجارة والرماد تضم عشرات الألاف من الأشلاء المتفحمة بالإضافة إلى ذلك عشرات الألاف من سكان المدينتين الذين تضروا بالإشعاع المنبعث من هذا السلاح.
