يتحدث الكتاب عن تاريخ الفلسفة الروسية ويكشف الكتاب أن قرون الاحتلال التتري ثم الانعزالية التي عانتها موسكو كانت سببا في حرمان الشعب الروسي من التعرف إلى الفلسفة الأوروبية الغربية ولم يتصل المجتمع الروسي بالثقافة الغربية على نطاق واسع إلا بعد فتح بطرس الأكبر نافذة تطل على أوروبا وسرعان ما أثر النفوذ الغربي في موقف الشعب من الكنيسة، وشاع التفكير الفولتيري الحر بين طبقة النبلاء كما ظهرت من ناحية أخرى رغبة عارمة في التوغل إلى أغوار سحيقة من الحياة الدينية والعثور على معنى «المسيحية الحقة» وتطبيقها في مجال العمل.
