كانت الحرب العراقية الإيرانية الطويلة 1980-1988 هي المجال الذي نضجت فيه الخبرة القتالية والمهنية للمؤلف الذي شارك في معظم معاركها ضمن سلسلة القيادة والأركان، ثم كانت الحرب على الكويت عام 1990، فنراه يقود قوة الواجب الأولى لقوات الحرس الجمهوري، منذ الشروع باجتياز الحدود الدولية بين البلدين حتى السيطرة على العاصمة في مدة قياسية جدا وهي خمس ساعات فقط. وحين تلت تلك الأحداث حرب الخليج الثانية عام 1991، التي سميت أم المعارك، نجده مجازفا في نقد خطة الدفاع العراقية نقدا لاذعا مما عرضه إلى اتهاما شديد نال من وطنيته. ثم يصف لنا الفريق الحمداني بشكل ممتاز أسباب الانتكاسة في اثنتي عشرة نقطة، تشير كلها إلى الخطر الكارثي الذي يحيق بالدول عندما تتركز عملية صناعة القرارات المصيرية عند زعيم البلاد وباستشارة محدودة من لدن بطانة يفتقر معظم للكفاءة والثقافة الاستراتيجية.
