يقدم هذا الكتاب نقدا جوهريا لما يعرف \"بالبنيوية\" من خلال تناول يعتمد أساسا على أعمال الأنثروبولوجى، كلود ليفى شتراوس وترتبط \"البنيوية\" أكثر ما ترتبط بمجموعة من الأسماء وبعدد من الشعارات المثيرة أكثر منها ببرنامج أو مذهب محدد بوضوح، وواقع الحال هو أن هناك عددا من الخلافات بين هؤلاء المفكرين، إذ طور كل منهم الأفكار الأساسية للبنيوية بطريقته الخاصة، حسبما تراءى له، وأن هناك فكرة رئيسية فى قلب البنيوية، وهذه الفكرة قد تولدت وإلى حد بعيد من أعمال ليفى شتراوس.
