يتناول الكتاب أن ما شدنا إلى الأطلال حين نراها قدرتها على جعلنا نحس بالزمن الصافي من دون تلخيص للتاريخ أو إنهائه في وهم المعرفة أو الجمال وهكذا تتخذ الأطلال شكل الأثر الفني التاريخ القادم لن ينتج أطلالا والمواجهات التي لن يكف عن خلقها تنتج تهديما وأنقاضا ولا تنتج أطلالا لكن الحدس لا يستبعد انفتاح ورشات ينبني فيها شيء جديد فيستعيد الإنسان معنى الزمن ويستعيد وراء ذلك وعيا بالتاريخ وقد اتخذ المؤلف مسارا طويلا بين مواقع الأطلال أو الآثار في مناطق مختلفة من العالم وعاد إلى الأدب والسينما وإلى بعض الذكريات ليكتب نصا دقيقا وإيحائيا في الوقت نفسه فإن قارئ هذا الكتاب يجد فيه تدريبا ضمنيا على نوع من السفر الذي يرى فيه ما ترك لنا السابقون بطريقة مختلفة.
