يتناول الكتاب التأثير الذي أحدثه الإسلام والمسلمون في مجالات الثقافة الهندية المختلفة صدر في إطار سلسلة حضارة واحدة التي تختص بها مؤسسة الفكر العربي لجهة نقل أمهات الكتب من تراثات الشعوب الأخرى وبخاصة منها الهندية والصينية يحاول المؤلف وهو الخبير في الديانات الهندية وصاحب علم واسع في تاريخ العلاقات العربية الهندية أن يستعرض الأفكار التي جرى تبادلها كما لو بالتراشح ما بين المسلمين والهندوس ويؤرخ للممارسات الثقافية والاجتماعية والدينية الناشئة عن التأثر والتأثير في هذا التفاعل الفكري ويرى أن التبادل ما بين الشعوب لا يمكن أن يقتصر على التجارة وحسب فالسلع تحمل في طياتها فكرا وثقافة ولا يمكن للتبادل التجاري إلا أن يتضمن تفاعلا ثقافيا بل إن هذا التبادل نفسه يفضى إلى تفاعل فكري وحضاري.
