رواية الوديعة نموذج فذ في الحوار الداخلي والتحليل النفسي، يقول دستويفسكي عنها إنها تجري على الأسلوب الفريد الذي لم يسبقه إليه سوى فيكتور هوجو في عمله العظيم \"خواطر محكوم عليه بالإعدام\". فالبطل في قمة المأساة يسترجع مراحل علاقته بعروسه التي انتحرت ولم يزل جثمانها مسجي أمامه، ويحلل هذه العلاقة المحمومة التي يتجاذبها قطبان هما العشق العنيف والرغبة في السيطرة وكيف صارت هذه العلاقة عذابا وجحيما من التناقض انتهى بانتحار الفتاة الوديعة المتكبرة. وحادث مؤسف للغاية\" نمط فريد أيضا في التحليل النفسي والتصوير الساخر التناقض الذي وقع فيه أرستقراطي شاب أراد أن يمارس ما خاله منتهى الديموقراطية فأدى ذلك إلى أعجب المواقف وأوخم العواقب.
