يعد هذا الكتاب إسهاما في التعريف بفكر ممثل الجيل الثالث لمدرسة فرانكفورت أكسل هونيث، الذي يعتبر من أهم المفكرين الذين عرفهم الفكر الغربي المعاصر في السنوات الأخيرة، وذلك لما أظهره من تجديد في فكر هذه المدرسة الفلسفية التي ينتمي إليها، إستكمالا لبرنامجها الفكري وتعميقا لمشروعها الفلسفي، ولما أحدثه من تأثير في الحقل الفلسفي الإجتماعي والسياسي والاخلاقي، وخاصة حينما استطاع أن يؤسس نظرية جديدة، أي نظرية الإعتراف، وفي مقاربته قضايا ومشكلات العالم المعاصر الإجتماعية والسياسية والأخلاقية. إنطلاقا من هذه النظرية التي تكتسي أهمية بالغة في النقاشات الدائرة اليوم في الحقل الفلسفي، وخاصة بعد صدور كتابه الصراع من أجل الإعتراف عام 1993 ،الذي يعد، برأي الباحثين، من أهم الكتب التي صدرت لتأسيس نظرية الإعتراف.
