هذه القصص سيغت على لسان الحيوانات في إطار تقديم الحكم والأخلاق للإنسان، وهي لطيفة في محتواها. وهو من الكتب الذي يرمي للنصح ومساعدة الناس في حياتهم الاجتماعية بحكم تشابه سيرتهم ومواقف حياتهم من الصدق والكذب والدسيسة والخداع والأمانة والعدل وغير من القيم الإنسانية التي يحتاجها المرء. وهنالك قول من إن هذه القصص هي من تأليف ابن المقفع نفسه ولكنه نسب النص لأصل هندي حتى يبعد عن تهمة المعارضة السياسية للخليفة أبو جعفر المنصور.
