هذا الكتاب يناقش الطموح الذي تتطلع إليه التربية والذي يشكل أحد معالم إشكاليتها، فهي تسعى إلى الجمع بين تلبية حاجات ومطالب الفرد من جهة، وتلبية حاجات ومطالب المجتمع من جهة ثانية، بين تحرير الفرد وإطلاق قدراته وتنمية إرادة التغيير لديه من جانب، وبين أن تفرض عليه أنماطا محددة من الإنضباط والإنقياد لحفظ إستقرار المجتمع وتطوره من جانب آخر، لذلك تبدو المهمة الصعبة أمامها في إيجاد التوازنات بين الخاص والعام. أهمية هذا الكتاب تتمثل بكونه يقدم مداخل نظرية أساسية في سوسيولوجيا التربية، إذ لم يعد بمقدور أي مقاربة جادة الإستغناء عن الأطر والمداخل النظرية والتحليلية والإنكباب المباشر على المبحث الحقلي والميداني مفصولا ومعزولا عنه.
