ألف ليلة وليلة هو كتاب يتضمن مجموعة من القصص التي وردت في غرب وجنوب آسيا بالإضافة إلى الحكايات الشعبية التي جمعت وترجمت إلى العربية خلال العصر الذهبي للإسلام. لقصة الإطارية الرئيسية لحكايات «ألف ليلة وليلة» تحكي قصة ملك يدعى شهريار، حيث بدأ الأمر عندما اكتشف الملك أن زوجة أخيه كانت خائنة وقد صدم لذلك الأمر، وما زاد ذلك اكتشاف خيانة زوجته له أيضا، فقد كان أمرا لا يحتمل بالنسبة إليه، لذا قرر إعدامها، ورأى أن جميع النساء مخطئات. تزوج الملك شهريار من العذارى، يوميا، حيث يقتل العروس ليلة العرس، قبل أن تأخذ الفرصة لتخونه.
