الكتاب يتحدث عن البنيوية التكوينية وهي فهم وتفسير العمل الأدبي والفني ضمن منظومة اجتماعية معينة، الكتاب موجه للأكاديميين بشكل أكبر من هاوي الفلسفة والدراسات الأدبية. الفصل الأول عن يتكلم عن هيجل وماركس ولوكاتش وسارتر وإسهاماتهم في المنطق والفكر الجدليين، ومن ثم يتكلم بشكل تجريدي في المستويات المعرفية والفلسفية ومن ثم في الفصل الثالث يتعامل بشكل تجريدي مع نشأة المصطلح واستعمالاته. كل هذه الفلسفة/ الدراسة نشأت على يد لوكاتش وتبناها وطورها تلميذه لوسيان غولدمان وهو منظر ماركسي وعالم اجتماع فرنسي.
