يندرج الكتاب في إطار الشروح التي وضعت خدمة للشمائل النبوية، بل هو من أوائل ما أُفرد من شروح الشمائل، وقد اقتفى الإمام أبو بكر السجستاني رحمه الله في تصنيف كتابه هذا مهيع المحدثين المتقنين، فاستقصى فيه الروايات الواردة في باب خلقه صلى الله علية وسلم، فأربى بما أورده -بغض النظر عن صحة هذه الأخبار أو ضعفها- على ما نجده في كتب الشمائل التي بين أيدينا، وذكر فيه أيضا ما انتقاه من روايات في باب خلقه صلى الله علية وسلم، فكان حاصل البابين ما ينيف على سبعين رواية مسندة، وما يقارب ذلك عددا، من الروايات الأخرى العارية عن الإسناد.
