لم تعرف الأقطار العربية فن الأوبرا إلا في القرن التاسع عشر حيث شهدت مدن والقاهرة والأسكندرية وبيروت ودمشق وحلب قدوم فرق إيطالية وفرنسية تعرض مسرحيات غنائية كما أتاحت الرحلات إلى روما ومدن أوربية أخرى حضور بعض العروض الأوبرالية من المسرح الغنائي مما دفع مارون النقاش الذي كان يتردد على إيطاليا إلى القيام بمغامرته المسرحية الريادية وإدخال الغناء عليها للتذويق الجمالي نزولا عند رغبة الجمهور كما شهد القرن التاسع عشر مولد المسرح الغنائي العربي بشكله البسيط على يد أبي خليل القباني وقد خلفه تلميذه الشيخ سلامة حجازي وفرقته حيث قدم مسرحيات يتخللها الغناء منها شهيدة الغرام وروميو وجولييت، ثم جاء سيد درويش ليقدم أوبريتات مثل شهرزاد والعشرة الطيب.
