لويس ماسينيون يعد من أبرز المستشرقين الفرنسيين والغربيين في القرن العشرين، حصل عام 1923 على درجة الدكتوراه بأطروحته الموسومة (ألام الحلاج، شهيد الإسلام الصوفي تلك الشخصية التي كان لها الأثر الكبير في حياته وتكوينه المعرفي. لعب دورا كبيرا في إبراز الصورة الحقيقية للإسلام والمسلمين مما مكنه من لعب دور عظيم كهمزة وصل بين الشرق والغرب وقد كرس ماسينهون جزء كبيرا من حياته لدراسة العالم الإسلامي وامضي حياته مفتونا بشخصية الحلاج وسحر الشرق، حيث تمكن من غزل علاقات متينة مع المجتمعات الإسلامية والعربية وأصبح مدافعا عن الحضارة الإسلامية واللغة العربية ومداهما عن الوئام بين الأديان ولعب ماسينيون أيضا دورا كبيرا في إحياء جزء مهم من التراث العربي والإسلامي مما عزز مكانته واحترامه لدى الكثيرين من المفكرين العرب.
