يتناول هذا الكتاب تعريف الاجتهاد وبيان شروط المجتهد وأسباب اختلاف الفقهاء والأدوار التشريعية التي سبقت ظهور الأئمة كما تناول كلا من أئمة المذاهب الأربعة الإمام أبي حنيفة والإمام مالك والإمام الشافعي والإمام أحمد بن حنبل وذلك بدراسة حياته نسبه وولادته ونشأته ثم سيرته العلمية من حيث طلبه للعلم وشيوخه وتلاميذه ثم صفاته الشخصية ثم بيان أصول مذهبه من حيث تبيين المصادر التشريعية التي بنى عليها مذهبه ثم بيان مصطلحات هذا المذهب وانتشاره في البلدان الإسلامية وأخيرا ذكر أبرز الكتب في كل مذهب.
