يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن من أين يأتي غذاؤنا حيث يعتمد مستقبل الأمن الغذائي في العالم على بذور ضئيلة الحجم تنتشر في الحقول والبساتين في سنة 1943 كان عالم النبات الروسي العظيم نيكولاي ايلوڤ وهو من أوائل العلماء الأفذاذ الذين أدركوا هذه الحقيقة يواجه الموت جوعا في أحد السجون السوفييتية وفي السنوات التي سبقت اعتقاله بأمر من ستالين ليكون كبش الفداء الذي ألقيت على عاتقه تبعات المجاعات المتكررة التي شهدتها البلاد وكان ايلوڤ قد ارتحل إلى القارات الخمس وجمع مئات الآلاف من البذور في جهود مضنية لتحديد مراكز التنوع الإحيائي الزراعي في العالم القديم ووقاية البشرية من شر المجاع.
