إن البحث في أسماء الله وصفاته وفق ما جاء في الكتاب والسنة هو من أجل المعارف وأشرفها ؛ ذلك أن أجل المقاصد وأنفع العلوم : العلم بمعاني أسماء الله الحسنى وصفاته العلا ؛ فالتعرف على الله تعالى من خلال أسمائه وصفاته يحقق العلم الصحيح به سبحانه. كما أن العلم بأسماء الله وصفاته يتمخض عنه إحصاء ألفاظها وعددها، وفهم معانيها ومدلولها وتدبرها وإدراك موجبها، وآثارها، ومقتضياتها، ومتعلقها، ولوازمها، وأحكامها، والدعاء بها. وهذا يفضي إلى عبادة الله ومحبته وخشيته، ويوجب تعظيمه وإجلاله. كما أن معرفة أسماء الله وصفاته، ترسخ في النفس معنى التوحيد ؛ فحين يعلم المرء أن الله تعالى واحد في ذاته وصفاته وأفعاله، وأن كل شيء رهن قبضته وطوع مشيئته الغالبة، فإن هذا الإحساسين شئ في نفسه مبدأ المسؤولية ويجليه في الفكر والشعور.
